Window Tinting Laws in North Carolina: What You Should Know in 2025

Window Tinting Laws in North Carolina

Window tinting offers numerous benefits, from enhanced privacy to reduced glare and interior protection. However, North Carolina enforces specific regulations to ensure safety and compliance. As of 2025, understanding these laws is crucial for vehicle owners and enthusiasts alike.

Recent Legislative Updates

In 2025, Senate Bill 43 was introduced, proposing changes to window tint inspection requirements.

The bill suggests removing the safety inspection of tinted windows and mandates that drivers lower tinted windows upon the approach of a law enforcement officer.

If passed, these changes would take effect on December 1, 2025

Note: For the most current information on North Carolina’s window tinting laws, always refer to the NCDOT’s official guidelines.

Understanding Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

VLT refers to the percentage of visible light that passes through your car windows. North Carolina’s laws stipulate minimum VLT percentages to ensure adequate visibility:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is permitted above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or the top 5 inches, whichever is longer.

  • Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

  • Back Side Windows and Rear Window:

    • Passenger Vehicles: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

    • Multipurpose Vehicles (e.g., SUVs, vans): No restrictions on tint darkness.

Note: A 3% variance is allowed, meaning a reading as low as 32% VLT is considered compliant .

Reflectivity and Color Restrictions

  • Reflectivity: Tint must not be more than 20% reflective on any window.

  • Prohibited Colors: Red, amber, and yellow tints are not permitted.

Medical Exemptions

Individuals with medical conditions requiring reduced light exposure can apply for a medical exemption permit through the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles’ Medical Review Program.

  • Permits are valid for up to five years.

  • A medical exception sticker must be displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the rear window.

  • Failure to display the sticker properly can result in a $200 fine

Inspection Requirements

Vehicles with aftermarket window tinting are subject to inspection during the state’s safety inspection process. An additional $10 fee applies for this service. Inspectors use a North Carolina-approved window tint meter to ensure compliance

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failing to comply with North Carolina’s window tinting regulations isn’t just a minor issue — it can lead to costly fines, inspection failures, and potential legal complications. Whether you’re a new vehicle owner or recently had tint installed, understanding the risks of non-compliance can save you time and money.

Fines and Fees

If your vehicle is found to have illegal window tint, you may face a base fine of $50, with court costs often exceeding $200, depending on your local jurisdiction.

In addition to these legal penalties, a failed North Carolina safety inspection due to non-compliant tint can lead to mandatory removal of the tint, a re-inspection fee, and delays in renewing your vehicle registration until the issue is resolved.

Traffic Stops & Legal Risks

Illegal tint can also attract the attention of law enforcement:

  • Officers may pull you over if your tint appears too dark or reflective

  • You may be cited under G.S. 20-127 (North Carolina’s window tinting statute)

  • Repeated violations can lead to a Class 3 misdemeanor charge

If you’re stopped for another reason (e.g., speeding) and the officer notices your tint is out of compliance, they can add a secondary citation — which affects your driving record and may increase your insurance premium.

Failed Safety Inspections

During your annual North Carolina safety inspection, your tint is tested with a window tint meter approved by the state DMV. If your VLT (Visible Light Transmission) falls below legal limits:

  • Your vehicle will fail inspection

  • You’ll be required to remove or replace the tint before retesting

  • You may need to pay another inspection fee
